PHEVs at a Glance
PHEVs, or plug-in hybrid vehicles, come with both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor and battery configuration. They differ from a standard hybrid vehicle in that they have a larger battery which needs to be charged, rather than charging on its own when the vehicle is driving. Because of that larger battery, however, plug-in hybrid vehicles are able to produce and store more electric power, meaning they actually provide an all-electric range, which hybrid vehicles do not.
For Mazda vehicles, this all-electric range is between 26 and 32 miles.* Typically, the electric mode in PHEVs is utilized during starting and on smaller trips. When the battery begins to deplete, the vehicle automatically transitions back to gas engine. Mazda PHEV models also have regenerative braking, which captures the energy produced during the braking process and sends it back to the battery.
Benefits of Driving PHEVs
There are many reasons to consider making the switch to a PHEV vehicle when the time comes for your next car. Here are just a few:
- Reduced fuel expenses
- Lower emissions output
- No range anxiety with gasoline backup
- Convenient home charging
