Mazda logo on the grille of an SUV

The Mazda logo is one of the most iconic images on the road today, representing a long and storied history of design, innovation, and power. But where did it all begin? Learn about the history and meaning behind the emblem with Northtowne Mazda.

Early History of the MAZDA Logo

The Mazda logo can be traced back to 1936, when it first appeared on the brand’s three-wheel trucks. At the time, the logo was an elegant version of the name with embellishments to the letters. Following that, the Mazda logo became a series of three stacked “M”s with long parallel lines extending from both sides, meant to symbolize Mazda Motor Manufacturer, with the wings representing agility and speed. The next logo was the first to appear in a circle, with a lowercase “m”.

Modern History of the MAZDA Logo

Next came the Mazda name in block letters, starting in 1975, and then a diamond in a circle to signal passion with a sun and a flame. The diamond transitioned to a more organic style to reduce similarities to the brand Renault. This is called the eternal flame logo and is meant to honor the rotary engine that Mazda is so well-known for. Finally, the logo took on a “V” shape in the circle in 1997, which is meant to look like a bird’s wings and symbolizes continuous growth and improvement. This is the shape you see on Mazda models today.
